Guidelines for the 2024 Texas Transit Awards (Deadline Dec. 20, 2024)

Award Categories

Outstanding Metropolitan Transit System

A transit agency recognized by the Texas Transit Association as a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)


Outstanding Small Urban Transit System

A transit agency recognized by the Texas Transit Association as an Urban Transit District


Outstanding Rural Transit System

A transit agency recognized by the Texas Transit Association as a Rural Transit District. These awards are given to public transportation systems that have designed and implemented programs that demonstrate innovative concepts or effective problem-solving techniques and have applied these successfully in the public transportation industry. Please provide detail on specific program improvements and achievements in the last three years, which can include, but are not limited to:

  • Enhanced safety measures
  • Development of Coordination planning and practices
  • Efficiencies in operating procedures


Outstanding Customer Service Employee

  • Development of effective marketing programs
  • Implementation of effective and productive policies and procedures
  • Promotion of positive relations and contributions to their community


Outstanding Associate Member

This award honors a Texas Transit Associate Member, either a company or individual that makes significant contributions to the public transportation industry in Texas and strongly supports the Texas Transit Association and its members.


Outstanding Public Transportation General Manager

A transit manager employed by any public transportation system in Texas. This award honors a public transportation manager who has made outstanding contributions to the public transportation industry. Each nomination should include, but not be limited to:

  • Detailed description of the career of the nominee
  • Description of his/her achievements or service that has advanced public transportation within their system or the state
  • A listing of any awards or other recognitions received by the individual
  • A listing of any advances made in community outreach, promotions of economic development and other innovations in public transit services


Outstanding Public Transportation Coordinator

An individual employed by the Texas Department of Transportation as a District PTC who works with the public transportation agencies. This award honors a public transportation coordinator who has made outstanding contributions to the public transportation industry. Each nomination should include, but not be limited to:

  • Detailed description of the career of the nominee
  • Description of his/her achievements or service that have advanced public transportation within their district or the state
  • A listing of any awards or other recognition received by the individual
  • A listing of any advances made in community outreach, promotions of economic development and other innovations in public transit services


Outstanding Staff Member Award

This award honors a staff member who significantly supports and provides assistance to transit agencies and their programs. This staff member can be from the federal, state, county, city or local level and must work in the office of a government agency, elected or appointed official. The recipient of this award must have been actively involved in some level of planning or support of transit related issues and provided assistance to the public transportation industry.


Rising Star Award

This award may be given to any young employee in the field of transit, age 30 and younger for exemplary or innovative work to further public transit in Texas.


Friend of Transit Award

This award may be given to any individual who does not work for a public transit agency, but has gone above and beyond to further transit or a Texas transit agency.


Transit Innovation Award

This award may be given to any Texas Transit agency who has done new and innovative projects in the field of technology.


Distinguished Service Award (This award is a joint recognition between TxDOT and TTA)

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Texas Transit Association (TTA) are pleased to present a Distinguished Service Award to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of public transit within the State of Texas. This award celebrates dedication, achievement, and impact, recognizing those who have helped elevate Texas’s public transportation landscape. In making this nomination, please consider the following criteria:

Note: This award is intended for individuals other than elected officials or TxDOT staff members.

  1. Detailed Career Overview: Provide a brief overview of the nominee’s career, including positions held, responsibilities, and length of service in the public transit field.
  1. Contributions to Public Transit: Describe any of the nominee’s achievements and specific efforts that have substantially advanced public transit within Texas. This could include policy development, implementation of new programs or technologies, or initiatives that have expanded access, efficiency, and sustainability.
  1. Recognition and Awards: List any awards, honors, or special recognitions the nominee has received for their work in public transportation, community service, or related fields.
  1. Documented Positive Impact and Examples: Provide specific examples of the nominee’s work that has had a measurable, positive impact on public transit, demonstrating how their contributions have benefitted individuals, communities, or transit agencies in Texas.
  1. Timeframe of Contribution: Identify the period during which the nominee’s contributions occurred, whether over a sustained career or during a critical project phase, highlighting their dedication to advancing Texas’s public transit system.

This award aims to recognize individuals whose commitment and achievements are a lasting example of excellence and progress in public transportation. Nominees should demonstrate a career with contributions that have left a lasting, positive impact on the industry and community.


Who May Nominate

Nominations may be made by any individual employed by a transit agency, an official of a transit agency, a regular or an associate member of Texas Transit Association, any TxDOT employee who works with the public transportation industry, any elected official or employee of local, city, or county governments. An organization may self nominate. You may make a nomination in more than one category. Please use separate forms for each nomination.

Awards Committee

An Awards Committee consisting of selected TTA board members and TTA members will review all nominations and make award selections.
